EVAN HERNANDEZ | SHAPE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW

Evan has an awesome interview in the Spanish Magazine Shape that just hit the streets! We had the KR3W translation department type up it and insert the photos, enjoy.

Hi Evan. What is the first thing that come to your mind when thinking about Spain?
Sick skate spots and beautiful girls. I want to go skate some of the spots over there so bad! Everything is smooth and fun, seems like there’s not a lot of security guards kicking people out either. Spanish people seem really nice and laid back, chill.
Hernandez is a spanish surname. Have you spanish ancestors?
Well my family came to the US from Mexico, but we have some Spanish blood in us from my Mom’s side.
Can you speak spanish?
Yes.
Have you ever came to Spain? (if so what did you like the most and what did surprise you the most, like any special custom…)
That’s the thing I really want to come and skate Spain! I might be rolling over there on a DGK trip and an Ice Cream trip. Can you guys take me to some spots?

What’s the thing with being from Long Beach? It seems that there is a good skate scene there. A lot of know skaters live there, correct me if I’m wrong, Mike Vallely, TK, Danny Montoya, Darrell Stanton, Tosh Townend… Is there any “Long Beach pride”?
Well, Long Beach has always had a good skate scene, not the best spots to skate but everybody pushes each other to skate better. The rent is cheaper then a lot of places, so a lot of artists and skaters kind of moved there. Back in the day everyone would meet up at Cherry Park, skate flat ground and do tricks off the stage. That park is the best to kick it with your friends and learn tricks. Then once all the homies like Terry, Knox, and myself got better we started skating downtown Long Beach. Then some homies would get a car and we’d be rolling all over LA, Hollywood, San Diego, the Valley.

Long Beach is also know for being a dangerous place because of the gangs. Is that true?
Very true. There’s always kids gettin’ shot over gang shit. Seems like everyone is involved with some gangs in LBC. You learn how to tell when something is going to go down and how to stay out of trouble.
Are you, being a skater, a target for the street gangs?
Well nobody is going to mess with you for looking like a skater, but you’ll get messed with for looking like a gang member. These days a lot of kids skate so it’s different, there’s not really dudes just lookin’ to beat up skaters. But I think since skaters are always outside in the streets your going to be at the same places that some gang shit goes down. It’s funny though because a lot of gangsters like to tag skate spots, cause they know there tags will be in the photos in the skate mags, so some gangsters like skaters for that.

Do you see a lot of skaters getting caught up in gangs where you live?
Basically everyone knows someone that’s in a gang. It could be your cousin, brother, or friend, but I see a lot of gangsters who start skating and they put they’re anger into skating and they get pretty good.
What happened with Baker? You skated for them some years ago.
People grow up and have to do their own thing sometimes, we’re all still friends.
Do you still talk or skate with some of them?
Hell yeah. I pretty much kick it with Terry ever day. I always see Greco and Ellington at KR3W too, we skate the park together.
Who are your sponsors right now?
KR3W, Ice Cream, DGK, Fury Trucks, and Zennitti Rims.

How is life on Kr3w?
Beautiful. I get a bunch of clothes I like get to skate the KR3W park, I love it.
Do you hang out with the team much?
Yeah, we all see each other all the time, skating the KR3W park, spots, or when we go on tour.
You are 21 and already have a little daughter. How is being a father at that early age? Can you skate and still do the things that other friends with your age do?
You do grow up quick when you have a kid, it’s a lot of responsibility. It’s all worth it though, because I love my Daughter Jenea and I still have time to skate and do my thing.
What does your day consist of?
Wake up, shower, go eat. Call up the homies and figure out if we’re skating. Sometimes I might go get a tattoo or something.
Are you working in some project right know, like a video or something?
I’ve been working on that Platinum KO edition video part and shooting photos all the time. Staying busy, trying to get on a trip to Spain!
What do you see yourself doing after skating?
Hustling, taking care of my daughter. Stay out of trouble and just live life.

I heard you got jumped for you TK hoodie over there?
Hell yeah. I was riding my bike over to Cricket’s house to go skate, then these two fools jumped out of a car and tackled me. They were like “check in the Hood”, but I got away and ran off. They got my bike though, trashed it, and kicked in the spokes and stuff. I had to buy new tires, ha ha.

When you’re not in the hood you’re pretty much lurking at Cricket’s and Simi Mike’s house right?
Yeah it’s cool.
Do you have to listen to filmers nerd out and talk about skate footage all day?
Yeah, it’s all I hear. A lot of madness goes down there. Madness, the Bush, and boxing video games on the first Xbox. We’ve all been playing that, my characters name is Furbo.
Who’s winning the boxing games?
It’s pretty even.
So you’ve been known to get in some street soccer games? Is that where you get your pop from?
Yeah the parks by my house, they got legit soccer leagues and stuff, but I just play some games, its fun.
What’s a typical day in the life of Furbz?
Wake up, shower, get crispy, eat, hit the bush and then go skate.
What if you don’t go skate though? What do you get into?
I’ll just go kick it at The Dirty, the Hawthorne skatepark. During the school year it didn’t open til’ like three cause kids would skip school, but now that’s it summer its open all day. Don’t have to wear pads or nothing because the cops don’t give a fuck down there.
Didn’t some basketball players get shot there or something?
Nah, some bmxrs did.

Did you shoot em?
Nah! Some gangsters did. It gets crazy over there sometimes.
How does your grandpa feel about you not having a job and sleeping till 12 everyday?
He’s over it! So my grandma’s got me doing chores like yard work, empty the trash, and clean the house. I might get a job someday.
You used to work at some chemical factory or something?
Oh, this crazy chemical resin warehouse. I almost died there. I accidentally spilled some gnarly chemicals; it was like a mini LA river in the warehouse. That’s why I don’t work there no more, ha ha.
You’re better off killing yourself on a skateboard, huh?
Yeah.
What are you’re plans for the future.
I’m just gonna skate, film, kick it with the homies.
How you want to end this?
Just want to thank KR3W, Supra, Baker, Venture, and Bones for flowing me some goods to keep me skating, or else I’d still be on the strug everyday.
